This 90-minute class introduces Ikebana as an artistic and meditative practice rooted in the philosophy of the Sogetsu School. Rather than following a strict curriculum, the class emphasizes creative exploration within the fundamental principles of Ikebana, encouraging participants to work intuitively with form, space, and natural materials.
The session begins with a brief introduction to the history and philosophy of Sogetsu Ikebana, followed by an overview of essential structural concepts and a short demonstration. Participants then create their own arrangements with individualized guidance throughout the class. The session concludes with a group conversation and reflection.
No prior experience is required. This class may be taken as an introduction to Ikebana or as a standalone creative experience. All materials are provided.
Instructor bio:
Stephan Eberhagen began his Ikebana studies over 15 years ago in Germany with the Ikenobo School, the oldest Ikebana tradition. In 2010, he joined the Sogetsu School of Ikebana and has been a certified Sogetsu instructor based in Miami since 2020. He currently holds the Sogetsu sensei rank of Jonin Sanyo.
His teaching philosophy reflects the vision of Sofu Teshigahara, who understood Ikebana as an art that harmonizes nature and humanity. In addition to technical instruction, he emphasizes experiencing the deeper presence and meaning of each arrangement.
Stephan teaches Ikebana both in person and via Zoom and has participated in numerous international exhibitions, including the book project Music Inspires Ikebana. Notable projects include creating floral arrangements for receptions celebrating the Japanese Emperor’s birthday hosted by the Consulate of Miami, arrangements for the Japanese Consul’s private residence, and installations for Asian Festivals in Miami. His work also includes large-scale arrangements, demonstrations, and classes at Ichimura Garden festivals, botanical gardens throughout Florida, private events, and institutions such as the Frost Art Museum at Florida International University and the Florida International Affairs Foundation.
