Ursula LeGuin wrote that “the secret to writing is writing… Writing is how you be a writer.” This workshop is all about getting you writing. It doesn’t have to be perfect or polished. In 2 hours, you’ll get words on the page and leave with fresh ideas for stories, characters, or scenes. Just bring yourself, a pencil, and a notebook.

We will use the 6x6 method for flash fiction (writing to 6 prompts for 6 minutes each) to help you get out of our own way and write, focusing on practice and play over product. Then, you’ll pick one of the prompts to refine further during the class.

This workshop is suitable for both new and seasoned writers. No draft or expertise required! You may use a laptop to write if necessary, but going analog and getting off screens is strongly encouraged for this workshop!

In this generative writing workshop, you will:

- Step away from distractions and make time to focus on your creativity

- Embrace practice over product

- Overcome writer’s block

- Experiment with fiction writing in a supportive, laid-back environment

- Generate new ideas to develop further outside of class

- Keep the writing prompts and activity format to use on your own whenever you’re feeling stuck in your writing practice

- Share your work (always optional!) and connect with other writers

Instructor bio:

Casey Mank teaches writing at Georgetown University and serves on the board of directors at the nonprofit Center for Plain Language. At her company, Bold Type, she teaches corporate, government, and nonprofit teams to get to the point and write with greater impact. Her own writing and writing advice have appeared in the Harvard Business Review, Nonprofit Communications Report, Schuykill Valley Journal of the Arts, Fiske Guide’s Real College

Essays that Work, and more. She is an avid Fairchild member, and you can often find her in a corner of the garden working on her amateur oil paintings or scribbling in a notebook.
