Intro to Bookmaking and Collage with Ash Llanes

3 Sessions: Saturdays, February 15, 22, and March 1, 2025 | 10:30 AM to 1:30 PM

This course serves as an introduction to bookbinding and collaging. Over three weeks, you will learn how to create a pamphlet stitch and a coptic bind. Collaging, inspired by natural patterns—whether abstract or concrete—offers an easy and fun way to express your creativity. This class provides the compositional and technical tools needed to develop a foundational understanding of both bookbinding and collaging.

This class is not designed for students younger than 16-years-old.

Please note that the cost of admission for this class does not include supplies. Below is the list of required materials:

  • Bookbinding needle
  • Waxed linen thread
  • Canon XL Mixed Media Notebook (9x12)
  • Bookmaking PVA glue (medium bottle recommended)
  • Decorative paper (two kinds, not too thin) or book cloth
  • Metal triangle (90 degrees)
  • Chipboard (.80 or .120 thickness)
  • Paper cement or glue stick
  • Heavy-duty box cutter
  • Self-healing mat
  • Metal ruler (18 inches)
  • Scissors or X-Acto knives

Additionally, for collaging:

  • Magazines and/or construction paper
  • Mixed media supplies (e.g., colored pencils, watercolors, or markers)
  • Stickers
  • Any other collage materials of your choice

 

Instructor bio: Ash Llanes uses a combination of digital and film photography to express their love for the steaming nature that is Florida. Ash received their BFA in Fine Art Photography at George Washington University’s Corcoran School of Design. Ash has a passion for darkroom photography, alternative processes, bookmaking, portraiture, studio lighting, and the history of photography.
