Bonsai 101: An Introductory Workshop with Nova Plantae

DATE: Sunday 7/27/25   TIME: 11:00am - 2:00pm

Explore the art and science of bonsai in this hands-on workshop. This class will introduce you to the fascinating history of bonsai, teach you how to identify and select pre-bonsai material, and familiarize you with various bonsai styles. Participants will learn essential techniques like root cleaning, repotting into a bonsai pot, directional trimming, and wiring for shaping. The class also covers proper fertilizing, watering, and ongoing maintenance to keep your bonsai thriving.

Please bring your own medium-sized pot or vessel; all other materials will be provided. We recommend a pot between 6" and 10" wide and 2" to 4" deep. It may be ceramic (glazed or unglazed) or plastic, but it must have at least one large drainage hole to ensure proper airflow and water flow for your bonsai.

A limited supply of vessels will be available for purchase.

Instructor bio:

Matias Cabrera, founder of Nova Plantae, discovered his love for gardening as a child, inspired by watching his grandfather care for his garden and bonsai trees. This early fascination grew into a lifelong passion, culminating in the creation of Nova Plantae during the pandemic. With over 2,500 bonsai plants now in training, Matias is dedicated to making bonsai approachable for all. His teaching style focuses on simplifying the process and sharing the joy of cultivating these living works of art, encouraging students to see bonsai as an enjoyable and accessible hobby.
