Gertrude Jekyll: Design Principles for Creating a Tropical Cottage Garden

DATE: Sunday 2/16/25   TIME: 10:30am - 1:30pm

In the late 1800s, at a time when women typically did not work outside the home, Gertrude Jekyll—an accomplished painter, photographer, designer, and craftswoman—became one of the most groundbreaking landscape architects of all time by spearheading the Arts & Crafts movement within the industry. The creative principles she established are still heavily utilized in contemporary landscape design and remain just as applicable to the gardens of South Florida as they are to the temperate climate of her native England.

In this three-hour combined indoor/outdoor lecture, local landscape designer, garden writer, and photographer Victor Lazzari will guide the class through his lifelong obsession with this brilliant maverick and her iconoclastic work. Come explore the legacy that Gertrude Jekyll left for gardeners like us today, and learn how you can create an Arts & Crafts style garden of your own at home!

Instructor Bio: Victor Lazzari is landscape designer, garden writer, and horticulturist originally from the hilly farm country of Maryland, where his love of making gardens first took hold as a small child. He holds a BA in Landscape Design (University of Maryland), an MA in Landscape Architecture (Florida International University), and a Masters Certificate in Agroecology (also Florida International University). In addition to his own private design and writing work, Victor recently served as the primary garden designer and rose curator for the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, Florida.
A Florida resident since 2007, Victor’s passion has always been English-inspired flower gardens, as well as any gardens that incorporate roses. He has been growing and evaluating roses for the past 25 years, and frequently includes them in design work for his clients. His first book, 100 Roses for the South Florida Garden, was recently published by the University of Florida. Additionally, Victor also works as a freelance features writer for Horticulture magazine, lending the South Florida community a seat at the table in the broader gardening dialogue of our country.
