Join your grandchild for a hands-on morning discovering the world of sea plants. In this workshop, you will work together to help build our teaching herbarium by preparing a real seaweed specimen for our permanent collection. With help from our staff, you and your grandchild will identify your plant and create an official record of where it was found. To remember the day, you will take a Polaroid photo of your specimen to keep. Each child also goes home with a small vial of preserved seaweed and saltwater to continue observing how marine life changes back in the water. It is a wonderful way to learn about nature and contribute to science as a team.

All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the class.

Instructor bio: Sasha S. Sikaffy, M.S., is an environmental scientist and educator informed by years of coral reef fieldwork and marine science education. She explores how children’s lived experience of science builds early capacities for awareness, agency, and care.

As the founder of In The Lab, she designs field-based learning environments where children encounter living organisms and scientific tools scaled to their hands, cultivating observation, patience, and inquiry in relationship to local ecosystems.
