This hands-on class introduces young children and their caregivers to native marine invertebrates found in South Florida’s coastal waters. Through guided observation and gentle handling when appropriate, children will study three to four different species and observe feeding behaviors that help illustrate how these animals survive and interact within their environment.

Children rotate between tables to observe different species up close, allowing time for focused observation and questions. Throughout the class, emphasis is placed on how marine invertebrates rely on plant-based systems such as seagrasses and algae for food, shelter, and stability, reinforcing the essential role plants play in sustaining coastal ecosystems.

Designed for children ages 3 and up with a parent or caregiver, this session encourages patience, curiosity, and shared discovery. Caregivers gain simple, accurate language to help children understand local marine life and begin placing these animals within the context of Miami’s coastal habitats.

All children must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the class.

Instructor bio: Sasha S. Sikaffy, M.S., is an environmental scientist and educator informed by years of coral reef fieldwork and marine science education. She explores how children’s lived experience of science builds early capacities for awareness, agency, and care.

As the founder of In The Lab, she designs field-based learning environments where children encounter living organisms and scientific tools scaled to their hands, cultivating observation, patience, and inquiry in relationship to local ecosystems.
