Growing Flowering Bulbs in South Florida with Victor Lazzari

DATE: Sunday 7/6/25   TIME: 10:30am - 1:30pm

In steamy South Florida, where winter chill is either negligent or nonexistent every year, many gardeners yearn for Minnesota-quality tulips or Virginia-style daffodils. But did you know that the tropics of the world are home to just as wide of a diversity of bulbs? Habranthus, griffinia, polianthes or alstroemeria might be unusual names you haven't heard before, but they are just as lovely as the most luscious cold-climate tulips with the added bonus of tackling South Florida's year-long heat and humidity with ease!

But what exactly is a bulb? How do true bulbs differ from tubers, corms and rhizomes? Which varieties would be the best for your particular garden? In this two-hour class, professional landscape designer and garden writer Victor Anthony Lazzari will explore the wonderful world of bulbs and their kin, with a focus on amazing, little-known tropical and subtropical species and hybrids that adapt readily to the South Florida garden!

Instructor Bio: Victor Lazzari is landscape designer, garden writer, and horticulturist originally from the hilly farm country of Maryland, where his love of making gardens first took hold as a small child. He holds a BA in Landscape Design (University of Maryland), an MA in Landscape Architecture (Florida International University), and a Masters Certificate in Agroecology (also Florida International University). In addition to his own private design and writing work, Victor recently served as the primary garden designer and rose curator for the Edison Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers, Florida.

A Florida resident since 2007, Victor’s passion has always been English-inspired flower gardens, as well as any gardens that incorporate roses. He has been growing and evaluating roses for the past 25 years, and frequently includes them in design work for his clients. His first book, 100 Roses for the South Florida Garden, was recently published by the University of Florida. Additionally, Victor also works as a freelance features writer for Horticulture magazine, lending the South Florida community a seat at the table in the broader gardening dialogue of our country.
