Showcasing Innovation: Fairchild’s Role in Space & Sustainable Growing

Maker Faire Miami isn’t just about the latest in tech—it’s about shaping the future. That’s why Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden, the most tech-forward botanic garden in the world, is bringing its groundbreaking Growing Beyond Earth® Innovation Studio to the Faire. This cutting-edge initiative, developed in partnership with NASA, explores new ways to grow plants in space and in small, urban environments. Discover how Fairchild is revolutionizing agriculture for astronauts and Earth alike, using technology to cultivate food in the most extreme conditions. Visitors can engage with real research, see futuristic growing systems in action, and learn how innovation in space farming is transforming sustainable agriculture here at home.

The Million Orchid Project (MOP), led by Fairchild, is the largest educational outreach program in the U.S. dedicated to orchid conservation, aiming to reestablish one million native orchids in South Florida’s urban landscapes. Once abundant, native orchids were nearly wiped out due to overharvesting in the late 1800s, but today the region offers many suitable public spaces—like parks, schoolyards, and roadways—for their reintroduction. Through partnerships with schools, volunteers, and a mobile STEM lab, MOP is not only restoring orchid populations but also engaging communities in hands-on conservation science and developing strategies to protect rare plants in urban settings.
